Ductless systems are a highly efficient and easily installed primary heating and cooling system for electrically heated homes. These systems are safe, quiet and heat homes at a fraction of the cost of baseboard or wall heaters. To help you learn more about ductless systems, we’ve answered customers frequently asked questions.
What’s a ductless heating and cooling system?
Also known as a ductless heat pump or Mini Split, a ductless heating and cooling system is a highly efficient zonal system that does not require air ducts. The system includes an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air-handling units, linked by a refrigerant line. Each unit can be controlled independently.
Do I still need my old heaters?
While a ductless system can be used as a primary heat source, homeowners are encouraged to keep their existing electric heating units (such as baseboard or wall heaters) as a supplement to the ductless system in case of extreme weather conditions or in hard-to-reach extremities of the home.
Is this new technology?
The technology was developed in Europe in the 1970s and has been used widely throughout Asia and Europe. Ductless systems have been used in the U.S. for more than 30 years. This is proven, energy-efficient technology.
What are the advantages?
A ductless heating and cooling system is an easily installed, highly efficient zonal electric heating and cooling system. The reversible, 2-way heat pumps collect heat from outside the house and deliver it inside on the heating cycle. Your home will be more comfortable, with even heating and cooling from room to room. Because a ductless system is more efficient, you’ll save money for years to come. Ductless systems are clean and quiet.
What does it cost?
An installed ductless system with one indoor heating/cooling zone typically costs between $4,000 and $6,000. Additional zones and other variables may affect your cost. A qualified local installer can help you decide whether a ductless heating and cooling system is right for you. Lincoln Electric Coop also has a $800 to $6,000 incentive dependent upon household income and if your home is eligible for the program.
